Uniquely For You
Marble House |
| Tour
the stunning Marble House, a Newport
summer "cottage" that was built for Mr.
and Mrs. William K. Vanderbilt.
Construction on the mighty mansion began
in 1888, at a reported cost of $11
million. At the time, the Vanderbilts
were considered one of the wealthiest
families in America. Upon completion in
1892, William presented Marble House to
his wife, Alva, for her 39th birthday.
Elegant balls and lavish social
gatherings were a regular staple of
Marble House, making Mrs. Vanderbilt one
of the top hostesses in Newport. When
she wasn't dazzling society with
fabulous parties, Alva Vanderbilt was
one of the country's earliest crusaders
for women's rights. She was the foundfer
of the Political Equity Association, and
on the back lawn of Marble House she
built a whimsical Chinese Tea House
where she would hold suffrage rallies.
