Today's port of call is the seaside town of Sitka, which possesses a unique heritage including Native American and Russian culture. Sitka is also the site of the official transfer of Alaska to the U.S. from the Russians in 1867 at a cost of $7.2 million. Scoffed at in its day as "Seward's Folly," the investment in the natural resources-rich territory turned out to be the best deal since the Louisiana Purchase. (B, L, D)

Your port of call today is Ketchikan, known as the "Salmon Capital of the World" and the "City of Totems." Located on tranquil Revillagigedo Island, Ketchikan is home to the world's largest collection of totem poles.
